MCUSA finished their evaluation of the Harley-Davidson Road King Custom and it appears the orange and black has produced a winner. Read the review.

Thats a cruiser - too bad the OCC types dont focus more on this style custom once in a while. I bet you could make this thing look wicked by throwing some cash at it

I was planning to go to Carolina HD tomorrow to get a t-shirt or three. Now I know which bike I want to sit on.

edit: For $145/day they will rent you a Road King or a Road King Classic, not the custom.rolleyes

No doubt the visuals of the RK are first class, but its s-l-o-w "performance" and minimal ability to handle curves and the abundent potholes on our roads make it very marginal for actual back roads use. I test rode one a couple of months ago that had been "breathed" on. Of course I had just tried a Suzook hiyabusa so the extra "power" really was not impressive. Heck...it wasn't even noticed! What I did notice was the horrid ergos induced by those beach bars: almost as bad as the buckhorns that were on my '02 1200 std. Sporty.

Visually the bike was a typical H-D-superbly finished, but functionally.....  The test ride did reinforce my strong feelings for my '04 1200R as a bike that I will be keeping and keeping.  DFO

The '04 Roadster is my favorite of the Sportster line.

You really can't fault the Road King for something it wasn't designed to do. It was made for someone who wants to go all day on the Interstate. I certainly wouldn't want to do that on a Hiyabusa. I wouldn't want to do a track day on a Road King. I have an FXD because it is good at both cruising and curves, but not great at either. I've been telling myself my next bike would be a Low Rider. I have been giving the Road King some thought lately. The Mrs. says the next bike will be more comfortable for her.

The surprising thing about the hiyaughlee Suzook is how comfy it is...if you put on bar risers.. Even better than the ZX12R I had...which was traded for my '02 1200 Sporty! Who needs power when ya can have a hardleeablesinn??? HA! DFO

Great review.

I still cant fathom spending 17 G's on a bike though regardless of what the badge on the tank says.

Yeah, I should tell her she would be more comfortable on her own bike. Maybe I'll just get her an '04 883 Sportster, gently used of course. Someone is bound to want to upgrade from one soon.

I did go to Carolina HD. It's a nice shop. You can rent a V-Rod for $99/day. I talked to my brother in Hawaii about that. He said he rented a Fatboy for a weekend once when he was in ANOC at Ft Huachca (sp?). He won a poker run and got a small trophy for best bike in the post run show. He didn't have the heart to tell them it was a rental.

lol I can see why. I think you should convince your wife to get a ride of her own. I think he'd get more enjoyment out of it than she ever would sittin' on the back.

RB, wouldn't you would rather have an EG Standard than a RK if you really want to put on the miles? And besides, it's more bike for less money. And designeraccd has a point as well. I've spent many 600 mile days in the saddle of both the laid back cruiser and the slightly (like he said add risers) forward posture on my Concours, and at the end of the day, my butt isn't sore on the Connie like it is on the Hardley. My butt's still not completly happy since we did the west trip a couple weeks ago on the HD, and I have all the little comfort goodies like a rider backrest on it. Still, I get in the mood for both of them. I think the trick is to be slightly leaned forward or back, so the shock over the miles doesn't transmit straight up the spine. Many of these new bike models out there are way to bent over forward in my opinion to enjoy on a long ride. The racing posture is great for the track and around town, but really gets the wrists, neck and knees on a long haul.

They should call it the FLHRCPR: Road King Poseur Royale. Why take the best looking bike in the line (RK Classic) and crappify it with buick-gold metalflake, tacky bling-bling tank badges, an incomprehensibly ugly chrome flyscreen, Honda Sabre wheels, and worthless beach bars, not to mention lowering it so the already-lean-angle-challenged FLH chassis scrapes even earlier? And a passenger seat that makes your pillion slide off the back? Puh-leeeeeease. Dumbest (and ugliest) H-D since the Tour Glide.

IMO. :-)

I will say that the black ones aren't too bad. Put a nice deep black H-D paint job on just about anything and it'll look good.

No, no, nooooooooo.... if you're referring to the Road King Classic, all day on the interstate is precisely the opposite of what it's designed to do. No windshield, beach bars, no suspension, no actual seat.... bar-hopping (solo) and parking is what it's designed to do. Least functional bike in the line. I have no doubt they'll sell a bazillion of them.rolleyes

The standard Road King and even the Classic serve well in long tours, and even reasonable twisty action, but not this one.

I bought a 04 RK Custom on 4-14-04 and by June I had 5200 miles. With the addition of a windshield
and a new Mustang seat, it's great. There is no excuse for the stock seat, HD really can do better.
Yes, more power is better (is there ever enough?) but I get enought trouble as it is on my own.
I find the bike takes curves quite well and the usual double the speed limit sign rule seems to be it's
limit. I drive back and forth to my cabin in AR which is 250 miles each way and it's a dream. Once you
set the air pressure in the rear shocks right, it is a very comfortable bike. The price on the bike seems
high, but compared to any boat or car it's all realitive.

Howdy all. I'm new to this board but belong to a couple of others that I greatly enjoy. On one board there was a link to here and talk about the new 04 Road King Custom.
Just wanted to add my $.02 and thoughts since I own one of these fine machines. I got my RK in late May of 04  and would have to say that it is by far one of the sweetest handling and nicest riding bikes I have ever had the pleasure of being on. I have been riding for 40 or so years and doing my won wrenching since I was old enough to hold one in my hand. May not have always fixed the problem but sure have kept a few techs in job security. I do all my own engine builds and about anything else I can do without taking the bike to a dealer unless it's warranty work.
What I have discovered about the Road King Custom is that anyone that can ride a motorcycle and would get on this bike and claim to have any problems with riding it should probably NOT! be riding a motorcycle of any kind. IMHO, the RK is that sweet of a bike to ride.
The pros are the ease of handling, center of gravity, the wider tire on the back, the fit and finish.
The cons are the brakes sound like a freight train coming to an emergency stop with every one screaming to the point of embaressment at a stop of any kind. The seat is like setting on a rock and the handlebars are about the most uncomfortable things I have ever rode. They look nice but IMHO that is about all they are good for especially if you suffer from any kind of carpal tunnel like I do in both hands.
Other than that it is a phenominal piece of macheniery and I truly do love it. I would say that Harley did some good homework on this model and aside from the cons being probably the MoCo's way of keeping us paying Harley Tax, I give it 3 Thumbs up. Sorry couldn't figure out how to get the thumbs up to post. LOL
The other thing that I am quite disappointed with the MoCo is them putting the El Cheapo offshore POS crank bearings in the 03 and up TC engines. WTF is that supposed to be all about? So if they build 300,000 bikes and save one dollar per crank bearing thent hat's $300,000 they saved, now if they have to fix say 1000 bikes at the tune of $1500-2500 that would be $2,500,000 it will cost the MoCo to fix this problem so how in any forum did the MoCo really save any money.
Word of caution. Before doing any super high performance mods to any 03 and up TC you should think about changing out the crank bearings to Timken bearings. Yes it will require complete engine removal and case splitting but for any super high performance builds it will sure save trashing the bottom end.
Thanks for taking the time to read this post, Spiderman.

It's sure a pretty bike, Spiderman, but have they done anything about the awful clutch?

I've ridden my neighbor's '00 Roadking, and it's a good running bike plus much more nimble around town than my Nomad, but with carpal tunnel syndrome, I don't know how you'd live with that clutch in stop & go traffic.
