Neale Bayle took the 2004 Yamaha R1 through its paces on the track while Kevin Duke tested on the street and you get the privilege of reading their reports without the leaving the safety and comfort of your own chair!

One subject I notice that is never discussed concerning the rockets of the Rising Sun (or other countries for that matter). The evil monster lurking right under the paint known as "Full Coverage Insurance".
The gist of this is, how does everyone here see this? An "if you have to ask you can't afford it" issue or does $1800 per year for a 46 yr old with a clean traffic record on something that is only used about 7 months out of a year seem as much of a rip-off as it does to me?

Try State Farm. I'm 52 and pay $306.00 - full coverage on a CBR929 (still ...)

Thanks for the write up on the R1. Cab't wait to see the comparison. That sound was well described.

These liter-bike articles always have the same effect on me these days. This time, it was the stuff about the powerful radial brakes....

Real world reality check: even moderately crappy dual disk brakes like the brembos on my bike are plenty. How powerful do they need to be for street riding? In any street riding application, it is usually uncertainty about the traction available, or simply fear of endo-ing it, that limits "hauldownability". Do I need to be able to do it with one finger???

Articles like this used to get me excited. Now they just sort of make me laugh. Ayyone who thinks they need one of these for the street is not paying attention to what is actually happening when they are riding.

Good news is - even a new 600 is probably more than I need (120ish hp), and insurance would be less than I am paying now....

The new 2004 bikes all look fantastic. I sold my 2002 R1 last year to buy the 2004 R1 but, now I can't wait for the opportunity to test ride the all four new bikes. When will you be doing group tests?

I just bought my new 04 R1, I have been waiting since October when I first saw it on the Yamaha site while I was in Iraq (4th Infantry).  All I can say is that it will put a grin on your face bigger than the Grand Canyon.  Just for general knowledge: I am 31 and do not have the cleanest driving record and my insurance through State Farm is only $306.00 semi annually.

Real World Reality Check YD? I seem to recall somebody on this board not so long ago saying something about getting a mad bike like this even though he knew it was crazy. Ring any bells?

Seems like State Farm is cheapest on insurance. $306 a year for a '00 CBR9292 and $306 semi annually for a new R1 is still very good.

Congrats with that R1. That's the best looking SportBike on the market IMHO.

Yeah, I have USAA as well.  Only U.S. military (active, reserve, guard, Vets) and their families are eligible, however.  They are definitely the best around.

Don't know if you fit. Do you buy shoes without trying them on?

Good luck and take utmost care! See the newbie section for good advice!

120 HP 600cc?  Where can I get one? All I can find is 100-107 hp models at the dealers in my town.

After you crash it. Sell it to me as a race spare! Get an SV for your first bike and learn how to ride first.

The R1 is the best bang for the buck in terms of a Italian style wanna be. Feels like a sport touring bike when you throw a leg on it and looks stunning. It gets my vote for the best looking japanese liter bike. Too bad it has I am a squid written all over it. I will take the Honda CBR1000rr. Ugly as sin and heavy as a pig. But handles better than the rest.

But Mr. mrrw60, the ugly as sin and heavy as a pig, wins races! There are obviously good hopes for ugly pigs. Hmmm, the R1, oh yeah, I recall marshalling at ROA this Spring, I had to help push that one out of the way.
Yes, it's beautiful and ranks as the best looking sportbike (I agree), but there are performance problems.

BTW seen the Euro Tricolor version of the "ugly pig"?

You didn't see through my humor! And your correct the Honda is dominating. The CBR would be my choice for one of the new jap liters. Kawi too much power for a small frame bike. Which means sketchy handling and less forgiving. Suzuki proven performance and the bench mark for the others to follow. The Yami to me is style, and alot of bling bling hype nothing more. Honda is the shit in terms of out of the box race bike. And the weight to Power ratio is a positive factor when riding. More than enough power for street and track riding good weight distribution entering and exiting corners. I bet it rails like my RC51 . Then again I am a twin type of guy so.. My next ride for 2005 will be the Mille Factory.

That R1 is so sick! I got a chance to ride it and personally I thought it was way better handling than the ZX-10R, which also has been recalled. Scary.

time to look for a different ins. company.  that's wayyy too much for a 10k dollar bike.
look into the companies that charges by the value not the type.
