Decent looking ride. That V-4 actually looks like a twin. But if it's the same powerplant as the Venture they should've retuned it to be like the V-Max, give it a little more punch. Kind of looks like a Road King.

Great write-up, I hated the digital speedometer too.

Otherwise it looks like a pretty solid cruiser/tourer combo.

I've been hoping that another alternative to the Road King would hit the streets! I had almost made the decision to go for the Kawasaki Nomad, but now the "final answer" will have to wait. Thank you, Yamaha, for giving us more to work with in the Star line. I think the new Tour Deluxe is a winner. (I even like the speed-o-meter set up! Ssshhhhhhh!)

OK, since I can only compare it to the Nomad:

You get 2 more cylinders, and some more ponies, but it's also much heavier and the overall styling is just slightly "funny". It's not offensive, but it just doesn't seem to come together.

The brakes are evidently excellent, but the solid-looking front rotors are a big turn-off. The wheels look dated.

The backrest may be functional..in fact I'm sure it is, as it was borrowed from an office chair. The spedometer is an abomination that looks like it came from a '59 Edsel.

It costs more but still has carburetors instead of fuel injection. What's that all about? All the other gripes I could forgive in exchange for extra horsepower, but I am not going to disassemble this rolling tugboat to clean the carburetors.

Time to join the 21st century, Yamaha. I won't even consider a bike without injection.

My prediction is a dismal sales failure for this beast.

Looks like a nice "alternative tourer" as Cad said EFI would be a big plus this is 2005. Ithought that Ca. would require EFI on '05s. Speedo would be really trick if it was analog, why go with an L.C.Display when you're running carbs? I'll test drive on this fall.

To get the most out of the Tour Deluxe motor, you have to keep it in a lower gear and the revs up.  But it's made to ride that way, and since the engine is so smooth, and it's a quiet bike, that isn't an issue.
4th & 5th gears are stricktly for relaxed cruising.  But the bike can move out when you crank it.  It's much quicker than the Road King, and BMW, or Nomad, especially if you ride it right.

I know it is "to each thier own" But I would have to say for my personel choice. That 2005 Royal Star Tour Deluxe Rocks!  I know its not perfect by any means, ie: very heavy bike, but I think its more of a touring bike anyway than a cruiser, If you like staying on the porch you might be better off with a V-twin, maybe even a small V-twin like the 1100 yamaha classic, I think thats a nice size bike for around town, and not too expensive either. But for myself I dont liked to be chained down any more than I have to, and the open road is where it shows its true colors. Besides if its speed you really want, get yourself a crouchrocket. But I couldnt afford the extra insurance on one of those things anyway. I do wished they had come out with a black and blue instead of black and red. yeah

I am going to take a good hard look at the new '05 Tour Deluxe.  I currently own an '01 Royal Star "Boulevard" which I have added many of the previous "Tour Deluxe" items to.  This new model takes care of many of the features I wish I had on my bike.
1. Cruise control!
2. polished fins on the motor!
3. Bigger tank!
4. Those lowers will definitely be more comfortable for cool weather riding (here in WA state)
5. 4 into 2 exhaust ( Mine has 4 into 4 - looks good, but crowds the passenger floorboards)
6. front and rear crash bars
7. wider billet clutch and brake levers
8. ignition key in a "normal" place ( mine is on the right side behind the driver seat)

thise that concern me
1. those seats - the stock boulevard seat was a BOARD!  upgraded to a cushy tour deluxe seat - same attachment mechanism?)
2. that handlebar - I added a set of risers to my stock bars 1 3/4 rise 1 1/4 pullback - I am 6' 2" and my brother had problems with the positioning of that wide bar on his Road Star Silverado - hit his knees duriong tight cornering maneuvers) wonder if the same risers will fit the new bike and the 3" longer SS braided cables and hoses...
3. that speedo - I don't really care if I can see it (how often do you REALLY look at your speed?) the current one on the tank takes some getting used to too! - but just wonder exactly what it looks like with the windshield off - the one shot I have seen, it looks pretty good.
4. which color!?!?!?   My current bike is black w/ silver pinstripes ---  red/black or black/grey??

Just traded in my 2001 Royal Star for the new '05 model.  I love it!   I loved my old Star, but this is much nicer.
The handlebars is not as low as I thought, tho I don't know how you could add risers anyway.  The new hand levers are super.  The number on biggest difference I notice is how light the steering is.  My old bike had a tendancy to "fall" into the corner.  The new bike is much more neutral.  I don't know how this could be, cuz I think all the geometry is the same.  Different tires tho.
The second thing is the suspension, what a ride!  It seems to work much better - differnet linkage, different shock in the back.  Front fork the same as the old.
Nice job on the seats, cruise control is swell.  I like the dash and have not had any trouble reading the speedo, except that the KPH markings are too visible.  Locking hard bags, yay!   Tall backrest ( and my wife LIKES it!)
I haven't finished breaking it in yet, so I don't know if it really has more horses, but it cruises REAL NICE!
BTW, it is the black/silver color - sweet!

I'm not a fan of cruisers, but I like the looks of that bike.  Maybe it's the color scheme...I dunno.  Probably is the engine subliminally calling out to me...

Just read the article on the 05 Tour deluxe. I am and old HD guy & the last few years I have been riding on a customized Road Star. I am in the market for another long cruiser, have had my eye on the E-Standard and a few other HD models, Just a few days ago I went out to look at the new 05 Tour Deluxe, I really like the feel of the bike & the looks and I think it will fit the need for long rides. I also the same day went to the HD dealer & sat on a few HD models that I have had my eye on, Well I think I have made my mind up! looks like it will be the new Yami Tour deluxe, it just feels so much bigger than the HD models, The HD just seemed very small to me vs. the Tour Deluxe. I have a few friends that own the Venture & they really like their rides, and they ride with me all the time & man I have to say they have tons of power & take twisties like nothing. I like my bike to feel big, and this bike does that & the wide handle bars make it feel real nice..The Roadie that I ride is lowered & has wide bars & has that big feel. I think this is my next cruiser.

Just bought a new Yamaha Royal Star Tour Deluxe yesterday. Over the years, I've had several Harleys, etc., but the overall quality, handling, etc., of this new Royal Star is incomparable. There is another consideration: a five year unlimited mileage warranty. Nothing that I know of (car, motorcycle . . . nothing) comes close.

I have made up my mind, and it is going to be my next ride..Royal Star Tour deluxe. I also had harleys & like
a few of the new models but the tour deluxe just has the right feel for me, It just feels much bigger
than any of the Harleys, I like how the bike just feels big, a few of my friends ride ventures and they
say nothing but good stuff about them..I am sold.
Looking for a Black & Silver 05..

Hello all. I am new to this message board and registered just to give you my opinion of my 2005 Royal Star Tour Deluxe.  I live in the Huntington, WV area and was the first around here to own the new TD.  I got a great trade in on my 2001 Road Star from Stafford Motorsports in Ashland, KY and have not looked back since. This bike is superb.  I am 5'11" 245lbs so I need a bit of space to be comfy on a motorcycle.  This bike provides me with lots of room and carries my big a$$  blush  around with plenty of get up and go.  I have only one complaint so far, on a day ride in the WV mountains, my wife and I were 2-up and we quickly found the lean limits of the TD.  A downhill right hand sweeper and just a bit too much entry speed had us srubbing off some of the chrome on the right engine guard bar.  But all turned out ok...    Oh yeah..second complaint, the damn thing is so comfortable for my wife, I have to be careful because sometimes she falls asleep back there.... and she's a good one so I don't want her to fall off!!

Seriously, this is a great bike, lots of midrange, good gas mileage, way comfortable.  And most of all, its size and styling fit my size and styling.

Welcome to the forums Chili 4x4.

I did the same thing on my Nomad (though I actually scraped the muffler and floor boards) and decided right away that I needed more air in the rear shocks if I was going to haul my wife and luggage around.

So how does this bike look to you regarding mechanical access & such? Can you get to things easily or will you have to tear the bike apart to get to simple stuff like plugs and hoses?

Greetings All

Thought I would share my views on the Convertible from Australia. I have only had it a couple of weeks and must say I am impressed so far.  Good handling for such a heavy bike, excellent brakes, engine is getting better day by day as it loosens up and the cruise control is just plain decadent. The standard of finish is up to the usual high standard of Yamaha and it is a very solid bike all round.  It is heavy though and you need to be aware of that all the time.  It sits the highway very solidly and given the standard of road we have in Australia it needs to have a good suspension.  The suspension is very sensitive to the air pressure running in the shock and I prefer running it near the maximum even without the cheese and kisses on board.(local vernacular for wife - rhymes with Mrs)

I have seen the comments about fuel injection and whilst in a general sense I would mostly agree with them I do not see it as a turn off. The carburation is well set up and I do not think the engine suffers from having carby's. The only difference is that injection is easier to remap to achieve different engine characteristics but if you are like me and too old to worry about all that stuff it is unlikely to make any real difference.

Have not had to pick it up yet - that is going to prove exciting!!

Cheers and safe riding.

I got a new Royal Star Tour Deluxe on 4/9/2005 I will say I love it. Now have about 800 miles on it. The Longest ride for a day has been 180 miles round trip but the weather has been cool and rainy here in Indiana.

I own a 98 Tour Deluxe. I love the bike so I imagine the 05 would be improved. The only thing is the odometer. I do not care for it that much. I would like to have the bigger tank as mine is only 4.8 gallons. Also the cruise sounds sweet on those long rides. And as for people putting this bike down, don't knock it until you've tried it.

I bought a new Tour Deluxe in sept of last year. After riding Harleys for years I went to a Wing then A Nomad in 2001, and then traded the Nomad for the Deluxe... No comparison the Tour Deluxe wins hands down... I am so glad that I chose the Tour Deluxe it is very comfortable and roomy.... As everone has said it is quite a bit heavier, but makes up for it in H.P. will make some H.D. riders mad but have tried on a few 04 standards and to there dissmay have beat them on the drag and rolling also, sorry guys, really pissed off my friends to get beat by a rice grinder... I also loved my Nomad ,the Injection was a nice thing but pound for pound the Yahamer has more stuff and I am sure It would have beat my Nomad. I am 62 years old and shouldn't even be thinking about a race but sometimes you just slip back to your teens and go for it...
