The latest offering from Buell is the urban assault vehicle, otherwise known as the 2005 Buell CityX.

Not a huge fan of Buells but that looks like it could be pretty fun. Short wheel base, lots o torque. Gotta love those hooligan bikes. However, I'm not sure if I agree with the direction in which they're promoting it:

"The CityX is ready to take the holeshot at every green light, dart around potholes, avoid lanes of strangled traffic and drift through the tightest lines the urban jungle has to offer," Buell's PR literature boldly states."

Doesn't exactly sound like they're promoting responsible riding, but hey. Get in where you fit in.

Dude, smell my finger...Seriously.

Brave words from Johnny!

To be honest, the bike doesn't look much different to the Lightning so I'm kind of at a loss as to what it is for?

I think they're just interesting commuter bikes. Shooting around town is a lot of fun with that sportster evo engine, but they suck on the highway. At least they aren't touting it as an all time great sportbike; you have to respect them for that.

I'm interested in seeing one; the translucent tank is an interesting concept- kind of makes the fuel guage optional- and I could see one looking pretty spiffy with the tank illuminated from beneath at night. Of course, I'm a dork like that.

As for QLG's bike- I actually like them, and even like the stock exhaust; but there's no denying they ARE a funky lookin' machine!

I guess they are going for the small city market, for starters, and then they will do the 1200 version for the big city guy's ?

I think that's the focus, loumc smilewinkgrin .

Strange (to me) is that the 'City-Cross' is considered an "exotic" across the pond.

If you wanted to go all the way, you could put water and fish in the illuminated faux-tank, ala L.C. Greenwood turn

Styling-wise, I think it is stroke of brilliance. That bike looks bad-ass.

One complaint about the article - how about a picture of that translucent airbox cover? It is one of the bike's most unusual features, yet we don't really get to see it. Every article like this should have at least one rider's view photo.

I can't complain...but sometimes I still do.

I'm eager to see this one in the flesh, the translucent thing we will call a tank (except the tank is the frame) should be super cool, and pictures wouldn't stand a chance of really coming across on the image. I can see the Euro crowd going for the model, since they are hot for the Street fighter concept, and we can't get going on that yet (which doesn't make any sense to me, street fighter is where I'm at), but, Sweet Jesus, what kinda street fighter is a 900, when 1200 is what is needed? Must be some funny fighter for everyone else.

Oh wow, you guys are the coolest. What other motorcycle website provides this kind of rapid response service?

As for the photo itself - that rider's view photo, supersized, made my little heart go pitter-patter. Very cool. Not so sure about the handguards, but you can't deny that they would be useful.

Would a 36 year-old university professor look like he was just trying too hard to be cool if he rode one of those to work?

Hand guards are super items, if you don't think so, it just means you don't get knarley enough. (although I still say they should be called lever guards, but I can see why that term would flop) :-)

I love handguards. The ones they fitted on the Buell are awful though...

I like the styling direction, sort of Northern European with an American twist. Lots better than the Dakar bikes, all too top heavy cumbersome. Saw a few photos of a Lightening riden by a Doctor in Holland and she was about 8 feet in the air with it. Was doing cross-country rallies with it. I've talked at length with the engineers who worked on the XB platform. They're built to an incredible standard and tested way beyond what anyone would ever do to a street bike they didn't absolutely hate.
If you've ever ridden a Lightening, it's like riding an 80-hp mini bike. Once underway the size just makes you laugh, so does twisting the throttle. It's almost too much fun!
I've got my '03 XB9R set up for sport touring and it's super. Did an 1,100 mile weekend with it to run down to Road America and watch the roadraces with old friends. Never missed a beat and never failed to blow the doors off any 4-wheeled annoyance I encountered, which is why I love big twins. I figure if I can't do it with a 1,000 twin, time to do a reality check. The bike's been perfect since I got it, have only 7,000 miles so far, but that's going to change once this house is done... Ride!

Good to hear Randy, and, having a bike that does the deed, is the final qualification, I'll (almost) never knock that. You would really get the giggle meter pegged in the Sierra passes (the ones that are like a driveway, no center line, closed in the winter, not the routes of the big rigs).

Randy XB9R, what kind of set-up do you have to make your bike sport-touring?  I have a 12R and I've been looking into doing the same.  Know anything about HELI bars?

...as opposed to riding a canary yellow Ducati????  Who are you kidding, prof?  You got the bling bling right now, the Buell would just be a different flavor!

I'm just wishing Buell would put a different engine in those things.  I love everything about the XBs except than damn Harley engine!  If only Eric would snuggle up to Honda or Suzuki and put a nice 90° 1000cc V-twin in there....

OK, V-Twin fans, Check out this eye candy, go to the road racing forum, the 6 hrs of racing on TV thread, drop down about 12 posts to Smax's post with the picture of The S&S engined Buell (not that anything is recognizable, since it's all "one off"), but nice throat size.

The beauty of this is, this engine is available to the public, unlike V&H's 'two-off' "V-Rod".

From the interview referrenced in '6-hrs...':

DBC: What is your overall plan for this project? GS: S&S is making these motors to sell. We have orders for five right now.  Those guys are confident that performance potential is there.  As we prove what the potential is, we will get more orders. (Note: since their recent success, 15+ have been ordered.)
The interesting thing is that while the Vance & Hines bikes are running real well I am surprised that there aren’t any others (V&H's) out there yet.  I wonder why they have been so hesitant to sell whatever package they have.
Make no mistake about it.  G2 (S&S/Bryce) Motorsports is racing this bike but we are in the business of selling these motors and this technology...
GBIII: ...We invite everybody to look at every part of the motor because they are available to the public.  S&S races what they sell and sell what they race...

That engine for sale? Well now, that might just be the engine I was looking for, to replace the Harley engine, in my Buell, that didn't hold up to "normal service", so this trick Buell has been sitting around with a basket case engine. This sounds good.

I think the translucent bodywork will probably look like crap after a couple of years.

But the rest of the bike looks way cool.  I never really thought much about Buells, but the changes on this bike, namely the higher bars and seat, make it look like a bike I'd like to own and ride.

Do Buells have hydraulic valves?  That would be a huge plus in my book.

Many of the Buell enthusiasts that post on the Buell forums couldn't quite figure out what it was for either. I think most of those old school guys didn't like that it was mostly style over substance. Personally, I like it. I love the black wheels and had already switched out my stock bars for motocross style bars. I think what Buell is trying to do is capture some of the younger buyers who wouldn't have considered a Buell before and the European market which is actually doing quite well.
