Get a real bike???
Thats what my Buddy heard from a Harley Dude the other day while cruising his 88 Suzuki Savage. After chasing him dwn to give him a few words of his own and the HD guy riding off fearing for his life it made me wonder. Whats a real bike? To me its anything with 2 wheels you enjoy riding. Am I wrong? Whats yer take? Rodconfused

p.s. My 79 KZ1000 is coming along great and my wife is really getting good at riding hers.yeah

Probably bigger then a 50 or 70cc Honda Passport that was such a good selling bike by Honda in the past ("You meet the greatest people on a Honda" days & HD riders assume this is the best word to use on anything that is not HD.

Remember all the others on the road are crazy & out to kill you.

You came to the wrong place to say that. If it's under 500ccs, it's a scooter, not a motorcycle here. Any argument about that and expect to be edited. smilewinkgrin

A well ridden 250 will leave a badly ridden cruiser for dead down the twisties. Even a well ridden one will struggle to keep up.

If you like it and enjoy it then it's the bike for you. I paid $5200 for my '01 V-Star 1100 almost a year ago and I can just about guaruntee you I'll log more miles on it than 90% of Harley owners who paid 2x to 4x as much for their bike... I'm having a blast and will buy another Star bike when this one retires.

For an unbiased (and well written) point of view, read almost anything by Peter Egan. His stories about his Honda Benly and the 50cc Honda will leave you no doubt that these, too, are motorcycles. Peter has ridden, and raced, more bikes than most people you or I will ever know. He has owned Ducks (and still does, I believe), Triumphs, Nortons, a Vincent Black Shadow, several Harley's, Suzuki's, and on and on. He raced a Honda 500-4, a Ducati, and Lord only knows what else.

These discussions remind me of family dynamics. The kids all squabble and fight but when an outsider starts picking on one, they all band together. Bikes is bikes, man. Leave the superiority complexes and name calling for someone else.

:-) Smitty summed it up: "HD riders assume this is the best word to use on
anything that is not HD".

The operative word here is "bike". A HD = bike. 600cc and up Jap ride = motorcycle... ;-)

That's precisely the kind of thing I mean. I'm a Harley rider. Thanks for assuming that you know what I think. Thanks also for putting all riders of a particular brand or style of bike in a single group. Get real.

As long as you enjoy what you are riding, it doesn't matter a damn what it is. If others don't like it, that's their problem.

You do realize that many big twin riders don't consider the Sportster a "real" bike? lol  ;-)

I wasnt bashing HD riders. He was just the one who got me thinking bout the question. I like all bikes, but some seem to think if yer not on an HD yer crap. Ive also noticed sum newer riders on crotch rockets are joining the ranks with thinking cruisers are all dogs.
Cant we all get along? LOL   Rod

(Warning: Generalizations herein)

Sport bike riders will always thing everything under 1 liter is too slow unless it has 4 cylinders. Cruiser riders will always think that sport bikes are too uncomfortable. Harley guys will always refuse to come in physical contact with anything that doesn't have "Harley" written on it(this includes clothing). Most European riders will never understand the joys of riding a big bike. And most American riders will never understand the simple joy of riding something small and light. And everyone picks on the scooter guys.

Bias is everywhere. And there isn't much you can do to change it.

Get a real bike? Leave it to weekend poser to make that statement. I encountered one of those knuckleheads and my statement was "wanna race and get a dose of reality?"

A bigger bike doesn make it faster and I've seen 250 Ninjas in the hands of a good rider smoke litre bikes in the corners.
Hell I was out cornering some hotshot on a CBR600 with my KLR650. I guess all those fancy graphics and high-end leathers dont mean you'll go faster does it.

Reality is what you make of it.

That is a load of *$*#!  Anything on two wheels and needs an motorcycle endorsement on your license is a motorcycle, in my opinion.  Scooters are bikes, damn, even a moped is a motorcycle.  Who cares what cc's a bike has?  If it has two wheels and a motor, it is a motorcycle.    Hence the term motorcycle...motor, etc.  lol Who cares what others say or think...if you like it, ride it!  People are too hung up today on image and politcial correctness..which is a bunch of bull anyway.  Be happy, enjoy life and if others criticize you about ANYTHING, that is their problem.  All it show is that they have an inferiority complex and low self-esteem and feel the need to put others down to make themselves feel better.  I know a guy on a Honda Reflex motorcycle (scooter), and he is an expert on all bikes, having ridden for decades.  Size isn't important, not only for motorcycles!  freaked    Just have fun and enjoy yourself!

Yeah, many NON-Harley Davidson riders encounter that attitude.

When I hear it, I just smile... if they want to "talk" I ask them how many miles they've ridden lately. After they share their numbers, I share MINE, and I invariably get a drop-jawed look of awe. Followed by embarrassed silence (especially since I'm only a "girl").

A "real" motorcycle is the one that the OWNER enjoys. Nothing else is important.

I've never encountered any of that "Get a real bike" attitude. If I ever do. Who cares? I didn't buy my Majesty to make anybody else happy.

i honestly almost hate to say this, but i'd say anything that can make it up to interstate speeds is "a real bike"  although in some cases that might be a rather loose termturn
