Looks like Extreme toy store here in St. Louis has gone down. Rode by there this weekend and the building had no bikes and a for lease sign on the door.

Sad part is that the store was the closest Kaw dealer around my parts. I may be 50 miles away from the nearest Kaw dealer. I bought my kaw 550 ltd from those guys a while back.

Looks like when this economy turns around, we will be stuck with the mega stores and not the smaller dealers who MAY stock some parts that are hard to find.

Dang, I never even made it to the place!  Who does that leave as a Kaw dealer in this area?  Midwest Kaw is gone, Cycle City is gone, and the St Charles "superstore" now has "St Charles Harley Davidson" all over the building, did they dump the other makes? (Guess they needed more room for Hardley "gear", 60% of the building just wasn't enough, those pesky motorcycles were in the way)

Back to the point, where would you go to see a Kaw or get parts & service? Maybe that's why I see so few Kaw's around!

Donnellson has been great, but I have not had anything major done to the ride so I really did not have a need for the kaw dealers.

I think there is a spot in illinois that I can go to but its about 30 miles or so out. St Charles still has some other brands, but for all intents and purposes, its a harley store. Midwest is still there as Midwest Cycle and trailer. They still have a nice stock of Kaw parts. He even has some old junk Kaws at his home I guess. Not to sure of Midwest though. I was up there a couple of times and some FORMER customer were reading them the riot act for screwing up thier bikes.

Three dealers have gone out of business in Utah and the others have had their worst year in thirty years. Two new ZX-14 are for sale for $8500.00 dollars. The Harley shop is fairing no better putting the mechanics on commission only.

Makes you wonder what the winter will bring for the dealers. Thats typically the slow period for the dealers around here.

What does one see most on the road?  Cages I will agree, but then not to many bikes in comparison, so m/c shops are not like the maze of dealer shops with parts to servicing or the small shops that simply work on cages bar basically any of the other in the m/c world.  Part of life I fear.

Our first shop was basically a bicycle shop that added on a few British irons to later add on some more, to even one make of helmet being the Cromwell (only a rare few I have to admit) though no protective gear.  Parts yes, but often it took a month+ to get them from England for they had to make the passage over the Atlantic Ocean to Canada, then by train to this city/town to Cdn Customs & its delays, to finally our shop.  So yes it took a while.  Anyone owning the bikes of to-day are really in the lap of glory.

Just saw the News that the only Motorcycle dealership in the Sierra foothills (Sonora Calif) folded and shut their doors.
The dealership had been a tiny one, until three years ago when a guy that owned a large building (ex grocery store) in a shopping center bought the dealership and moved everything into this large building and expanded inventory beyond belief.

Quads (ranchers and various outdoors types use them) Dirt /dual sport bikes, Sport bikes, cruisers, super standards (or neutered sport bikes) everything in the Honda and Yamaha lines. And apparel, OMG between dirt and street and colors and levels of price and brands... the selection was huge. So were flooring costs.

But.... the owner had no concept of drawing in customers.... I only went in a few times, but every time I was there, I was the only one there. Now there in no there, there.

Jamestown (Harley for those that don't know the joint) is still alive and well.

They are a very "active" dealership, draw pretty huge crowds to the activities (that's where, Cadd and I hooked up when he and Judy came to visit, pretty funny story, because I chose the spot because of it ease to find, I didn't know the parking lot would be a sea of bikers, when Cadd arrived, and I was yapping to someone and didn't see Cadd pull in, And ....I was wearing a Harley T-Shirt for no good reason.  I was the first person Cadd walked up to and asked "anyone know where the rider of this TLR is?).

They don't sell (never did) Buell. Modesto Harley had Buell for a short time, then Buell was sold at Modesto Ducati, for a short time, now (last I heard) Buell was sold at a Sacramento Harley dealership.

One SORT OF ADVANTANGE to many Cdn dealers, considering the short m/c riding season let alone all year around, is they can sell snowmobliles along with quads.  MIND you that means a lot of stock that is not used in the summer time to the m/cs not being used in the winter time.  I would have noting to do with snowmobiles in the way some of them handle them like they hit the mountain slopes to try to make it up LIKE a dirt hill climb & you should see the snowmobiles tumbling down to also run into Fir/Pine trees which are, in some cases, like running into power poles.

Personally I have no interest in quads for all that was avaliable were the little three wheelers, being dangerous to drive, to where they were banned.

I wanted to stick with m/cs. Also would have delt in protective gear ONLY look at the number that have bought 90% from shops on the 'net.  So any dealer will be loosing money on the outdated protective riding gear AS WELL.

That happened here a lot; small "old timey" mom and pop dealers either built giant new showrooms under pressure from the OEM or sold to someone who did.

All that square footage seemed damned expensive; never mind the astronomical increase in flooring, heating, cooling, insurance, maintenance etc. etc.

Looked like over reaching at the time, even here in bike crazy Bay Area.

I'm guessing they can only hang on a bit longer...maybe not make it through the winter. No market for snowmobiles.

Don't know where you live, but there is two dealerships in my little city of about 7000 people. Niehaus Cycles who are known for their Customer Appreciation festivities every May who are Honda/Yamaha, and if you go south on Historic Route 66 leaving there turn left at the light onto Route 16 and there is a Suzuki/Kawasaki dealership down the road on your left a little bit called Action Cycles. This is in Litchfield, IL. Never been into Action Cycle so I couldn't tell you about the quality, but they've survived all these years with the powerhouse that is Niehaus so they must be doing something right.

Sadly, the well intentioned go big or go bust scenario catches too many business ventures in a stranglehold. Huge buildings & paying expensive triple net leases (or high mortgages) and overblown inventory levels kill off lots of inexperienced operators. Motorsports stores can tie up hundreds of thousands of dollars in operational cash flow for months even years at a time. Apparel and accessories can have great profit margins per item, but low sales volumes eat that in a hurry when it becomes dead inventory. Combine that with heavy debt load and wholesale interest payments and you have a recipe for disaster. If there is little customer flow as Lou mentioned in his post, doom lurks. skull It's sad but true.

On the very point your speaking of Budoka, I don't have very good info right now, but The Sacramento (Roseville) Super Suzuki, Kawasaki, Honda dealership just closed, according to a post on the Bay Area Riders Forum site.

So, that's two in my general area.
The Roseville dealership is in High Money Land. They have a street that is Ten lanes wide. This just knocks me over.

Yes, large well established stores can go down too. That's one of the fatal flaws of the powersport industry, it's driven by emotion. Nobody needs a motorcycle as an essential, or an ATV, or a snowmobile, or a boat. We all want them, and can justify them any way we choose, but they are luxury items all the same. We can argue we NEED a scooter to commute economically, but really, car-pooling in an econobox with 3 other people is likely more cost effective. It wouldn't work for me living in the boonies like I do, but that's also a choice I made too.

The industry is going through hard times in the UK too. Where I live, near Southampton, the only dealers of new machines are small concerns selling one brand, the large dealerships have all gone bust. There are not that many left in the country, in fact. Even the local place that sold parallel and grey bikes has gone. I don't even know where I would go to buy a new Honda, not that my buying a new bike is at all likely. There is quite a large place selling HD's now I think of it, how long they will remain is anyones guess. I believe HD is not bothering to take a stand at the national bike show later this month.

Personally I wouldn't buy a new bike again (unless fortune really smiles on my finances). A ten year old, well cared for model is pretty much as good as a new one IMO and only a third of the price. There hasn't been very much progress in bike design in that time.

One thing I can say for decent ATVs is that the farmers use them rather then a horse, to their truck.  It gets them around on small jobs that requires a lot of walking to short drives with the cage when really the latter can be replaced by an ATV.  Problem is most of them are wrenchers of their farming equipment to some with a sort of home-machine shop.  Which means they will not require a shop  to service them.

Now in this area of Cold Cdn., IF(?) they have the money THEN it can go to a snowmobile for FUN riding to get them to a fishing hole & such.  So in reality the ATV or snowmobile will last so much longer in their hands compared to city folk.  So really not THAT profitable over the years.

Tack on the Govt is advertising the dangers to someone that tries to ride ATVs in a wild manner meaning injuries to death in some cases.

My family was from Southampton; my mom grew up at 36 Westfield Road, (stayed their many times back in the '60's while in boarding school), many of my family worked for the BAT.

Can still smell the tarmac and diesel smells from the neighborhood and here the milkman jingle his bells on those little electric trucks they used to deliver from.

The Nazis dropped a 500 pounder in the small back yard at 36 Westfield Road.

It didn't go off thank goodness.

Family used to tell me tales of WWII...Nazi flyers drifting down on parachutes who were met by neighbors, brought inside, given tea and a chat until the army showed up to take them away! lol

My father, who hated Germans till his dying day, never had a problem with my riding a BMW...and he loved his Mercedes 300SEL 3.5 back in the day.

Having been here from the 60s to later on the introduction of Jpn bikes & prior to that NO shop for m/c parts.

I would hate for someone to ask me how many of the new m/c shops closed up in MY area.  Can assure you it was/is staggering & I am never surprised as being in the business with some others WE ran across the same problems that forced us out of business well prior to tough money times like NOW.
