Hi Everyone - some colleagues and myself are trying to put together a little information on helmets, and the experience of motorcycle riders with noise. If you are willing to do so, would you consider doing a very brief survey (less than 3 minutes).

You will NOT be bothered with advertisements or follow-up emails if you decide to participate.

Any help is appreciated!

Took your survey...there is no accounting, however, for those of us who have multiple bikes of different styles.

OK, I took the survey, and it was interesting--although so simple I doubt if much useful information could be gleaned from it.

I am interested in any effort to reduce windnoise while riding.

Took the survey.

The only method for that, which I found, are helmets which contain noise attenuation/noise cancellation earmuffs. Motorcycle styles are used for rally racing and the other type is for flight/aviation/pilot such as military. The rally racing helmets are DOT whereas the flight helmets are not, though, I can't imagine why. The reason they contain noise attenuation is for the radio communication. The downfall for these helmets is their price. I have found three manufacturers who make the rally helmets and they are all expensive. I'm seriously considering purchasing a flight helmet and using it. Either way, I'm tired of wearng earplugs and WILL have one of these helmets before next riding season.

I've worn military flight helmets, and the noise control was great, but they weren't FF...dunno about the rally helmets. I'd prefer to wear a helmet intended for motorcycle use...if I could get a motorcycle FF helmet with a built-in earmuff, I'd be very interested.

Ask, and you shall receive >>>>> http://www.stilo.it/english/index.asp

Though, they are auto racing helmets, they are designed the same as motorcycle helmet, have fullface and 3/4 and according to the US distributor who is here >>>> http://www.tigerperformance.com/index.asp they are DOT rated.

There are other distributors, one which I found in Wisconsin, but I don't have that info within reach right now.

The three manufacturers who make these noise attenuation helmets are Stilo, Sparco and Peltor.

All of your replies have been fantastic! Thanks to all of you for your help on this survey and your comments.

We wanted to start with a quick and easy survey to get some basic information on people's perspectives on this issue, but have some much more in-depth surveys and behavioral studies in the works. Most of our work to this point has involved making test recordings in different types of helmets and investigating some potential noise reduction strategies.

BTW, if you are interested in discussing this with us in more detail, I would encourage you to email me (Mike):

We will also keep monitoring this thread for your thoughts on noise control in motorcycle helmets.
