Hi everybody, I'm considering taking up motorcycling as a hobby. I am 20 and really have no idea how to get started so I have a few questions I would like to ask just to make sure I'm on track and am getting good stuff.

1. I live in texas and here you must take a course at a riding school to get you license (at least thats what the DMV told me) so i looked into a couple and ran across Harley's "riders edge" program and I was just wondering if you guys think this class would be a good introduction for me or not or if there's something better?

2. if I do take that class I need a helmet, I currently have $50 to amazon, what would you recommend for a full face hemet?

Thanks you for you time helping me out.

1. do take the course regardless if it's "riders edge" or msf because it's beneficial for riders that 'have no idea how to get started' imo.

2. any helmet that is dot and or snell approved is good to go. regardless of brand, model or price, find one that fits your head comfortably. visit motorcycle dealers or gear shops like cycle gear and try it on then buy one or if you can find it cheaper online, order it.

What Jon said plus, yes, a full face helmet as 40% or so of impacts are to the jaw/face area.

AFAIK, the "Rider's Edge" program is based on the MSF program, so not much difference in the instruction.

A full-face helmet is a very good idea, but I think I'd recommend purchasing one from a brick-and-mortar store, where you can try it on before buying (especially if you're not too sure how a helmet fits). Take a look at the third or fourth post in this thread for some guidelines.

What, or who, made you decide that you might want to give riding a try?

War may sometimes be a necessary evil. But no matter how necessary, it is always an evil, never a good. We will not learn how to live together in peace by killing each other's children.

What is your main intent with a m/c?  Is it commuting to school /work & home again plus riding a bit around town, or are you keen on a lot of hwy riding?  It will help us a bit is making suggestions from our past experience to our sensible advise to others.  Oh yes are you sort of at home with wrenching on your cage or others things for one needs to wrench a bit on a m/c what with oil changes, to filters, to adjusting chains to cleaning them to lube on them & some other places asa time goes along.

So good in handing out advise on wrenching the bike & sometimes it is something as simple as "fold your kick starter before trying to fire up" & things like that.

Remember all the others on the road are crazy & out to kill you.
