I am wondering what you would chose first...the X2R or the CR2? (or Thumpstar, or SDG etc) I am leaning the X2R direction, but your comments about crap rear brake and various other components makes me wonder how much it would cost to rectify. Anyway, I hope that you respond with opinions, since I have zero experience with minis and am looking to do some bar banging with my brother, while allowing the 6-10 year old relatives have a blast as well.

There's no doubt that the CRF50 comes in first, at least in terms of sales. The problem is that it takes a lot of money and time in aftermarket mods to make it big-rider friendly. The Pitster Pro X2R comes pre-assembled and ready to rock. It doesn't have the same level of quality as some of the aftermarket stuff you can buy, but the price is virtually unbeatable. The X2R looks like a million bucks and performs well too. The rear brake problems were very annoying, but you're going to have that kind of issue with any bike that has a brake pedal that bends under the peg. I haven't tested enough of the race-ready, budget minis to say which is the best. For now. We've got an Xtreme 125 Pro Stock in the garage right now that needs my testing attention.
Here's something to keep in mind. The Pitster and many other race-ready, budget minis come with manual transmissions. If you really want to be the fun uncle and let your young relatives play around when the come to visit, you might look at something that doesn't require a clutch. Shop around, ask for other riders' feedback and remember that the sky is the limit with these little bikes. You can still find a clutch-less machine that is more than capable of bangin' bars with your pals. This is going to be an expensive hobby no matter how you look at it because trust me, things are going to break no matter which bike you buy. | | Back to Top | | |
