MotoUSA contributor, Mark Kariya, took a recent trip to Ohio for a day on the trails with KTM's new, street-legal 450 EXC. He rode the '06 model with us earlier this year so he's a fair judge of what the pavement mods have affected.

Last year in the 450 Enduro test I decided that if I were to dual-sport one of those bikes it would definitely be the EXC. Now, KTM has already done it for you. Finally, here is a machine built for off-roaders - a dirt bike that won't get you tickets. That's the kind of mindset I like to see out of an OEM. Not everyone needs comfy street amenities, just enough flash and honk to throw up a figurative middle finger to that obstinate ranger who's got your license plate memorized.

I can see a heck of a shoot-out in the making...  the EXC vs the 50 state legal Husqvarna TE450

I would love to see a shootout, even having the XR or Dakar or something. I figure something like the Dakar would shine onroad, but not off. I wonder though about putting a lot of miles on it, riding the BCDR a number of times... Any initial impressions about how well the bike will last over years?

Shootout or not - this is a cool bike. Seems like people have been waiting for this for a long time.

Excuse me but the registered exc's have been available in Australia for over 30 years, so they did not see a market and go as your article suggests these bikes in different countries have been available for years.

Well, badcooky, I gotta back up Kariya on this one. KTM didn't sell a bike like this in America, which is a market. Then KTM decided to do the things needed to make it legal for U.S. roads, which is seeing a market and then going after it. Hope I didn't scare you off on your first post! smilewinkgrin

These bikes are not new they have been available for yonks in a lot of countries, the intro to the article is misleading they are just 07 EXC's with rego just like there was 06's, 05's and so on.They are not a new thing not a new bike genre is all.Just my 02.
But it is good to see you guys finally get stuff like this, our xr's,crf's are regoed and so are a lot of bikes here. But this may be changing for you and some of these bikes may soon be available to you plated.
The sad part is we don't get the XC range at all from KTM in Australia,my other beef with KTM was when they dropped the 380 2 stroke i loved them they where like a small big bore that ya could punish like a 250 anyway hi to you guys or G'day as we say.
