We got a chance to spend some time with a few of KTM's most popular cross country machines, the 250 XC-F, 300 XC and 450 XC-F, and we even dabbled on the super-mini-sized 105 XC. You can hear our quick thoughts on each by reading the report.

Nice write up on- as you mentioned- a portion of KTM's off-road line up.  I haven't seen a lot of KTM dirt stuff on MUSA and so it's nice to see this and see that you liked the bikes.  I want KTM to get some coverage for two reasons:

1. They still put full manufacturer R&D behind two-stroke engines.  AMA class rules on engine size have forced the 2t out of contention and therefore have killed 2t sales.  The Japanese are not investing new R&D into what they are not racing.  E.g. Honda's elimination of it's 2t line up.  The 2t is still a great engine design and desirable engine for many amature racers/riders and probably some AMA privateers due to it's cheaper easier maintenance and it's lighter weight.  The 300XC is a good example of how an extra 50cc's can change a high strung 2t engine into a tractor.  Making power more similar to 4t power and could make a 2t a competitive engine again in pro AMA racing.

2. The wide variety of bike designs they offer is amazing.  If you want to ride moto buy an SX.  If you're a woods rider and still want to have a competent motocrosser check out the XC's.  If you are a die hard woods rider and you like a stiff suspension and short ratio gear box get an XC.  If you like a wider ration tranny so your foots not dancing all over the shifter and like a softer hit suspension wise to soak up rocks and roots and not deflect your front wheel all over the place get an XC-W.  Any of those configurations come with your choice of a variety of 2t or 4t engines.  Don't want to be pigeon holed into strictly a 125cc, 250cc, or 450cc engine configuration?  For the XC/XC-W line you have an additional 200cc and 300cc 2t to choose from or a 400cc and 530cc 4t.  And this isn't even getting into th EXC line up...

I probably sound like I work for KTM.  I don't (they can give me a free bike if they want to makeup for the free plug- sounds like a fair deal to me at least).  I just like their unique approach to motorcycles.  Other manufacturers are driven by the industry while KTM is attempting to drive the industry (that tagline is for sale, KTM?).

Hey, watch this...

KTM is one of the most exciting companies in the industry.  All of their bikes are ugly, fast, and orange.  Their 690 supermoto is shockingly ugly.  In a world dominated by look-alike sportbikes and cruisers, these guys are naked barbarians crashing the party.

The 690 Duke is the one I really want to see.  Only 325 pounds, six speeds, slipper clutch.  It should be ideally suited for urban hell-raising.

I am the foremost expert on my opinion.

I think there is a possibility you were unknowingly testing the 450xc with it's soft or torque ignition curve setting on. so far you're the only source to describe the 450 xc as linear and electric. every other person with one or mag that has tested them says they are brutal and practically mx 450 like in power delivery. you're description sounds like the gray wire on the cdi might have been unplugged (or plugged in, dont remember which way) softening the power delivery for more torque and traction. just a thought.

i agree with everything there but the ugly part. i love the look of KTMs bikes. i can see what you're saying about the 690 supermoto and maybe the adventure series. but all of their other bikes are sexy. different of course tho.

"All of the gears seemed really close, so for more casual trail riders the XC-F-W might be better suited."

Guessing the reviewers got confused by all the new KTM models because there is not an XC-F-W in the 450/530 lineup. There are XCR-W's also known as XC-W (R) (KTM uses both designators). Unlike the RFS the -W means much more than transmission ratios. The XCR-W has a completely different new SOHC XC4 engine with separate crankcase/transmission oils, kickstart and e-start. The XC-F reviewed has the DOHC RF4 engine with traditional unified transmission/crankcase oil, and without kickstart.

You're right, David, that was a typo on the model name. The 250 4-stroke is available as an XC-F and XC-F-W, but the 450 version comes as XC-F and XC-W (R). Thanks for pointing that out. As for the larger models, there is a 505 XC-F and 530 XC-W (R).
