Take three big-bore Single thumpers, the Honda XR650L, Kawasaki KLR650 and BMW Xcountry, and you get our 2008 Dual-sport Comparo.

Cool review... I really enjoy the vids. I would have liked to see the KLR take some of the larger jumps the XR was shown taking, though... the KLR rider looked like he was afraid to dump it. lol

As usual, what a nice review!

Since people are going to ask these questions anyway, I'd shoot first and take the bullet:

1) Where are the comparable Suzukis (DR650 or DRZ-400S)?
2) Wouldn't that make more sense to test BMW F650GS as well since it is also in the big bore thumper class?
3) Of course, there will be folks who swear on their lives on KTMs, Husqvarnas, and even Husabergs. :)

Thanks

I liked the personal opinions at the end, and the story as a whole, as I have zero experience off road.

Sounds like the KLR is a great newbie reco!

Probably make a better "earthquake" bike than my 400SM...which I bought for the next "big one" to hit NorCal.

F2L: Are you related to Lou or what? No need to question, just know that there is always a method to our madness: First, Suzuk ibacked out at the last possible second, leaving us with only 3 bikes. KTM, Husky & Husa rarely grace us with their presence despite that we invite them every time. If there are any Berg/Husky/KTM dealers out there, we'd love to have you join us...

GAJ: Funny enough, the earthquake resistant bodywork will be an option on the 2009 model.

1K: Yeah...about those jumps...ummm...you need to ask Heedy about that one or just look on the top of Page 5 for proof that the Kwakker can get er dun.

Xchallenge woulda been a killer in this test, no doubt. But its not the bike BMW wanted in this test. We asked for both and got this one. Next question!

Maybe I've been under a rock, but Duke's no longer the Editor? Who took his place, when did this happen, and where is Duke now?

You guys a really good job testing bikes. No question about that. That's why I keep reading this site.

I know the story, manufacturers back up in the last minute. But some new people might starting to browse the site and wondering why those "logical" bikes are not there. Since that is unavoidable, I might as well ask the question first :).

Maybe it is a good idea to add 1-2 lines explaining why bike A and B are not there although they are logical. Thanks.

Great article but where are the other popular DS machines? Why wasn't the BMW dropped as being way over priced for this comparo? And where is the DRZ which would clearly fit right in here? That BMW is like bringing a knife to a gunfight.

Great real world usage test guys! Maybe this will really spark a new trend for DP sales. Love my XR but have to admit the Kawi is a heck of a deal with what comes stock on the bike. I had to lay down over $1000.00 in extras to get similar equipment that's stock on the KLR. All said, I really dig the style of the Beemer but over $9000.00? Come on. If BMW wants to get young blood into the fold they need to sell their 650's at or near their competition. Too much $$$ = no sale which = no converts. Since most owners modify their DP's, wouldn't it be fun to do a test with typically modified rides and see how much better each perform.  It's a great to show how much better these rides can be made for not a lot of dough!                               burger

I like S.A.M's idea.Take a couple of guys and give them the XR and the KLR and a budget not to exceed the price of the BMW just to see what they could come up with.
