We take Honda's all-new CBR1000RR for a spin at Laguna Seca to see if the '08 bike has the chops to challenge for literbike supremacy. Check out MotorcycleUSA's 2008 Honda CBR1000RR - First Ride

Very good/promising what we are expecting report MCUSA Scribblers. It definately looks like serious improvements that will show everywhere, no matter how it gets used. It will take a shootout of all the contenders (namely CBR and ZX) to bring things into sharp focus.
But this first Ride report is very interesting.

What some call ugly, others see as desire-able intimidation :-)

The visual design looks like Honda is trying to design their own version of the R6.

Very nice w/u by an obviously very nice guy; thumbs up on saving defenseless creatures.

I kinda think that yellow/black paint scheme looks unique and awesome!

Brake fade????

Luckyguy likely finds it ugly 'cause it would wax his 1098.

Great first ride report.  Like the handling w/street tires vs handling with race rubber comparison.  This sounds like an awesome liter bike and it's about time Honda stepped up with a slipper clutch.  Slipper clutch, electronic steering damper, newest electronic throttle control management gizzmo's and all for only a hundo more than last years bike?  Nice deal.  The upcoming smack down is getting more and more interesting.  With throttle abruptness eliminated, more power than mere mortals can use, and less and less weight buying an aftermarket exhaust anymore is starting to sound like a real waste of money (unless you have that hideous Kawi can).  So uh...one blurb about Nick the quick and not another mention?

p.s. More great photo's by Kevin Wing.  More often than not one ends up as my wallpaper.

Hey, watch this...

I wonder if this CBR will at least match the reputation of the 929/954 as a breakthrough bike...eyes Adam didn't seem all that convinced in my opinion. By the way, how come you guys at MCUSA couldn't get your paws on a red bike? The test bike looks like the design equivalent of a writer's block (lol). But heck how much I would love even one of those parked in my garage!:p I'm totally ok with the front end -Ducati resemblance - and the exhaust (sort of ugly, but as long as it sounds wicked...) The bike looks carved rather than assembled. Did that sound too cliche? Haha!yeah

Just one more thing... I was nearly lost like at the middle of the report... Not that it was real boring, but it didn't feel the way it should (Or maybe it was just the fact that I had been looking forward to learning more about this specific bike and then... well, I guess I miss Kevin Duke). confused

Congrats MCUSA! You guys scooped the US motojournal world with the first ride report I've seen. And a damn fine report it was too. Looks like you made quite a catch when you landed Adam. I hope you are paying him well to inspire his loyalty. Nice job folks. This year's smackdown ought to be the mother of all mothers this time 'round. How 'bout you guys scoop the entire free world with a triple 'A' comparo? Inquiring minds want to know. And if ya need any extra riding help, I'm a bonafide two-wheeled slut: No pay necessary. Just a great track and some gourmet snacks. Hell, I'll even buy the gas (but NOT the tires)....Cheers, Jack

Has anyone had trouble with the video playing? With the CBR1000 and the busa vs. ZX14 videos it will play for about 12 seconds and then freeze. I can even skip around in the video but after a few minutes it freezes. None of the videos have ever given me a problem and all the old videos still work perfectly all the way through so I don't know what the deal is.

looking forward to the shoot-out. I think it's kinda funny that Adam mentions that the CBR1000 is one of Honda's best selling sport bikes. In the US, they only sell 2 sport bikes - the 600 and the 1000.
Anyway, I think the black limited edition version looks much better than the two tone ones. Those look like the bike got crashed, and in replacing the bust up bodywork the dood got a deal on mismatched items.
I dunno why I have a feeling that the new ZX10 is gonna take it at the track, with the CBR being the street pick.

i'm sure adam meant out of their sportbike catorgory because i see 4 models listed in that catorgory for the u.s. in 07'....not sure how many in other parts of the world but there's more models out there in the 'sport' catorgory.

agree, i think the 10 is going to take it at the track....

I had the same problem.  I clicked on the videos tab on the left side column of the homepage, clicked on the thumbnail of the 1000RR, and then left clicked on "Right click and save target as".  It took 30 secs or so to download and then played without the problems.

Looks great. I'm not sure which will end up on top...this or the ZX-10R. As radical and as some say, ugly, as the ZX-10R is, I still like it quite a bit...it's grown on me. The new CBR is good looking I think, but the color options are kind of boring except for the red w/ black stripes. The special edition color is the best, but that's going to be hard to come by. The whole "easy to ride liter bike" is sounding like a good idea for me in a season or so.

I'm probably in the minority on this, but I really don't like these repli-racer license plate mounts of late.  They look too, what's the word, disconnected from the rear section.

Just nitpicking though. Nice write up.

Like the first report on the CBR1000RR as it seemed to get into sections that I can understand & appreciate.  Like Blender I am not sold on the "Americanized" style of the bike for one has to wonder how long said LP & signal lights will hold on.

Honestly if I was not in my last few yrs of riding I would take a much closer look at the bike, but have a Honda 929 & 954 I have liked since day one & I do not have to cut away part of the fairing to put on essential frame sliders which I feel to be a must when accidently the bike lands on its side at a nothing speed, mind you the massive exhaust system, which I would leave on stock & not search for  something with a different, plus lounder sound, might need some protection.

Colour I could accept anything though I am in preference to black or dark shades & the 929 still in the crate & headed my way was turned down as I am not sold on a "bumble bee" appearance for have seen to much of that in past years long with flames painted on every darn thing.  Still I am not buying because of my yrs, but really would like to feel the working of a slipper clutch as on most modern bikes now.

After all I come from one of the older riders that even turned down the swinging arm rear end suspension, feeling it would be like any springer system, for ridgid rear end to find some competitors in the Scrambling world (Motor Cross these days) passed me when comming down the steep parts & so switched to a swinging arm suspension-----my intoduction in learning that the makers made said changes for a sensible reason even back in '50, though only offered to "works" bikes & did not come bar a few specialized bikes in '51.

Remember all the others on the road are crazy & out to kill you.

Personally, i think the 954 was the best-looking CBR to date.

They are a result of the shorter tails and meeting the D.O.T. requirements regarding where the plate has to be located.  There will surely be quite a few fender eliminators offered that will fix the "disconnected" look.  Not to mention that the whole contraption comes off with 7(?) screws/bolts.

Nice write up, I like what I see with this bike.

I admitteldy always come from the viewpoint of a big/tall guy always in lamentation of the demise of the 'big' sportbike. I understand and fully appreciate that everyone is chasing down a goal to have the ultimate race bike, thus the ever shrinking dimension and shedding of weight which everyone seems to appaud leaves finding a bike that fits a fellow like myself a bit tricky. I had an opportunity to see and sit on the new crop of bikes at the recent cyclewold show in NYC and was pleasantly surprised to find the new 1000rr not so bad lookin in person , in fact the black really looked nice, the Honda attention to detail fit and finish is in full effect, also the ergos were just about the best; the 1000rr along with the Yammy R1 and Duc 1098 were still able to retain real world ergonomic that people like myself can still pretend to have a possibility of life with the current crop of sportbikes. Reading about how Honda was able to further refine this fine bike in hopes to revive the acclaim the groundbreaking model it was back in '92 is very exciting, I will wait patiently until the obligatory 'shootout' to see if the larger community feels that Honda has a 'top of the class' model here...and heres for hoping they stop shrinking these damn bikes any further
