MotorcycleUSA set out to see if an award-winning factory custom, the 2008 Big Dog Pitbull, could stand up to the rigors of being a daily rider. Read our review then sound off in the MCUSA Forum.

Have NOOOO interest in this kind of bike, but an entertaining writeup, a nifty looking bike that actually starts, stops, turns (sort of) and CERTAINLY turns heads at almost 10 grand cheaper than the trinkets OCC is churning out. About the price of a CVO Harley, if I'm not mistaken, so priced right for its market.

Heck, it even gets great mpg!

nice write up, hp and torque seem low for a almost 2000cc v-twin and price is too high for what the bike can offer for me.

Nice bike. The problem with BD is you have to spend money on the motor. Due to warranty issues BD has S&S put in a milder cam and lowered compression because they turn out so many bikes. Go to a rally and there are ton's of BD's there. For my money I got something with an S&S crate motor that runs like a beast and looks different than anything else at a rally.

Good writeup, but I'm still struggling with the "boardtracker-inspired design" comments. Other than the oversized front wheel diameter, what exactly is "boardtracker-inspired" about the Pit Bull?

hey, jon, from the seat of my pants impression, the Pitbull feels like it has way more horsepower than what the dyno numbers show. Just for grins, we did a max speed reading in 6th gear and the 117c.i. S&S put up big numbers with a top reading of 165.97mph, so there's no shortage of giddyup in that mill.

GeoffG, as far as the boardtracker-inspired design aspects, the bike is long and low with a stretched tank and a honkin' big front wheel. But I hear ya. Could you picture someone trying to back that humongous rear end in around a dirt track? Might make a memorable commercial though.

The key word, of course, is "inspired." They didn't say that it was a reproduction, but I'm sure there are elements of a boardtracker's design that they admired and tried to make a modern interpretation of in the Pitbull.

Yes if money were not an issue I would park it in with a herd of bikes. If I could only pick one or 2 bikes I would upgrade my V-Max. As stated above it is a lot of $$$ for mild tuning and lite h.p.

yep, that's been my impression too when riding bikes with big torque output i.e., vtx1800.  it feels faster and stronger than it really is especially in the lower gears.

i imagine the '165.97mph' reading came from the dyno machine and not the street, no?

Well nothing special about stretched gas tanks, Arlin Ness and others have been doing that for years and years. The long low look is Bay Area, has been for years and years.

If that is somehow board track inspired, it must of come from a monster line (track) of coke laid out on a board and snorted.

Not sure I get the "board-tracker inspired" thing either but it sounds good... smilewinkgrin   BD makes a nice "custom" at what some would consider a reasonable price...at least compared to some others makes.  And you are buying from a manufacturer that has been around and stands behind their bikes.  Lots of customs available but reliability and factory support should be a big consideration with this type of bike.

Yeah, those motors are not setup for max performance but it has to do with making a reliable factory engine that will last...and pass epa regs.  You can always get more performance if you want to make some changes though.

Not my kind of ride but if I were looking for a pricy "custom" the pitbull would probably be among my top choices.

I rode the 2008 Pitbull and it was awsome. I'm almost ready to buy one with the incentives they are offering but wonder what changes are coming out for 2009. Anybody know? And why did they detune the S&S motor so much? I though S&S was a great motor and am surprised it needed detuning because of problems.
