The 2012 BMW G650GS Sertao is a slick little single-cylinder dual-sport intended to draw in potential GS-series consumers interested in entry level adventure touring motorcycles.

Adjustable preload on the front is new for an "entry" BMW and, thankfully, they were smart enough to put an on/off switch on the ABS.

The $8,670 price, however, especially compared to the last Dual Sport comparison winner MotoUSA had, (the Kawi KLR, now priced at $6,299), is too steep for what appears to be a nifty little bike.

I saw the Sertao at my local dealer yesterday. Good looking bike, similar styling and details like the past "Dakar" model. Yeah, the Sertao (or G650GS) are not cheap, but you get more power than the KLR650 and a rock solid reliable bike and engine. The KLR650, even the newest one, suffers from a slightly underpowered engine, its heavy, and it still has the issues of the cam chain tensioner.

Two members in my local BMW club, husband and wife, bought a pair of G650GS last year, brand new. They rode them round trip from Green Bay to Patagonia South America (must be nice to be retired and have loads of cash). Thats about a 18,000 mile round trip ride. They had no mechanical issues with the bikes other than a few loosened bolts on the accessory gear.

My question is why is it so expensive compared to the Japanese. If memory serves isn't the engine being built in China or Taiwan these days. You would think that might whittle down the cost a little.
