Duke reports on his recent initiation of Ken into the world of mini speed racing. Check out the article here, and sound off.

C'mon, gang. You mean to tell me no one is interested in balls-out fun and frolicking without much danger and at a low cost? Or are you all too busy posing at the burger stand and pontificating on the message board to actually think about expanding your horizons and making them more horizontal?

Very cool, looks fun, reasonable price, but...

1) Not enough others to race against in my area...no fun being the only person in a class

2) Not enough easy access to roadcourses (or supporting Go-kart tracks) to make it an every-weekend pastime.

3) Location (Michigan) means season is too short to justify expense.

For the same cash, I can get a nice dirt bike (small new or used) and ride year-round through the woods, whether dealing with sand, mud, snow or ice.

Cut the price by a third or get the factory to actively promote regional/local racing series and it might fly...otherwise it will face the same fate as the YSR50, but more quickly since it is not street legal.

Great write up Dookie. I fear for my mortality so "normal" racing does not appeal to me too much. This sounds like a blast!

Words fail me when describing how much much mini roadracing is, guys. Hopefully it still came across in the article. Still to come is video that perhaps better demonstrates how exciting it is.

The next installment of the NSR series will cover another SoCal mini race organization that has a place for NSRs. At its most recent race, there were 12 NSRs there, so the mini scene is gathering momentum over here.

DingerJunkie, you may not have access to kart tracks or a racing club, but all it takes to have fun on an NSR50 is one other one and an empty parking lot. Honda would sell tons more of these funcycles if it could get more people tried them. I'm hooked!

And now I'm wondering if Honda will let me have one of its new NSF100s...

Kevin,

Great article.  I posted a link of it at my local Internet forum.  I hope it will generate more interest in mini road racing at our club (SMRRC).

If you recall, I posted our schedule on your first Project NSR50 thread.

Bring yourself, your bike, and your buddy to Stockton and race in our season finale on October 16.  We will also have a 2-hour endurance race.

Thanks, Mark, glad you liked the piece. Stay tuned for more mini coverage.

...Didn't mean to slam anything, Kevin. I agree that it looks like a hoot. Perhaps if I didn't have great access to off-road riding, and I had less than five months of the year when even parking lots were clear of slush, snow, ice or residiual salt...in that circumstance, I'd buy one in a sec.

Two of the biggest bike events in the area are the International Cycle Show held in the metro Detroit ara and Vintage Bike Days at Mid-Ohio. Perhaps Honda would be smart to arrange sign-up race demos for these little dudes (inside track for the cycle show and a variant on the demos already at Mid-Ohio). Either that, or heavily promote the same thing at their Dayton plant when they do their annual Honda Days (...think that's what it was called).

Without heavy promotion from either the factory, the racing organizations or the press (you're workng on it), this path will die outside of warm, metropolitan areas. Current racers and people who are already into track days will dig it, but good luck getting new blood without a concerted outreach of some sort...especially where cheap, easy dirt access is available.

...fat-finger on last post...meant to say "less than five months of year when parking lots were unuseable as tracks"

Excellent article, Kevin.

Not only was it very accurate, but you conveyed the spirit of the race-day very well. I've been spreading it around among the different online club boards. It should generate some more interest in the sport.

I'm looking at a host for some of the on-board and Skillz Day video. I'll post a link here once they're finished and they're up-loaded.

Mini-racing rocks! (Even if Kevin is faster than I am... for the moment.)

Ride safe,

Hawkster

Thanks, Hawkster, and welcome to MCUSA's board.

BTW, Hawkster is the generous racer who, in this article, loaned me the rear sprocket that helped us with top speed. He also shot some video that we'll be using in a follow-up on Project NSR, and he also organizes and teaches a riding skills course in SoCal. Tell us more about it, Hawk.

Gee, Kevin...

Thanks! Glad to discover this place.

You didn't have to go busting me out like that... ;)

Cool about the video. I'm happy to hear that you could use it.

Saturday's Skillz Day was a kick in the pants! About thirty near-new riders made some serious progress.

The rest of the Skillz Day stuff would prolly fit best in the newbie section, so I'll post it there once it's done.

Be safe,

Hawkster
