As we were headed south for our big adventure, I made a quick stop at Competitive Edge MX where Yamaha invited MCUSA to test out the all-new YZ450F. Want to know more?

Come on people! I know it isn't exactly moto season in most of the world, and 7 grand worth of motorcycle is hard to stuff in a stocking, but you've got to be stoked on the new Blue!

We rode it and the bike is very solid, so what's the deal? Can Chad Reed pick up the pace as SX comes to America? Is Stewart going to make mincemeat out of the Supercross division for the rest of the year? Gimme somethin', anything!!

I really wish that the local government would allow for people to make these things street legal. Yeah, the maintenance interval would suck if daily driven, but who cares? 220 pounds? Who wouldnt love that for screwing around?

Sure I would buy one just for offroading (depending on budget, of course) but it seems like every day places to offroad are disappearing. To top it off people that want to go offroading all end up at one place and the riding area becomes way overpacked with mixed skills riders.

Anyways, Yamaha sounds like they arent giving up. All of the modifications they made sound like very good ones. This years 450 will sell just as well as ones in the past because Yamaha knows what people want.

Cool bike!

you can street legalize the WR450F, but you probably know that already.

X,

Yeah, I'm the new dirt guy so all the office dudes like to pull rank and make me dust the monitors, wash bikes, change tires... But seriously, I'm dying to get a 450F shootout done too. It's in the works, hopefully, but we're still wrapping up the Baja stories and I'm putting together the results for our recent 250F shootout right now. Bear with me, it'll happen.

As for the quad issue, we don't really have much of a use for those here at MOTORCYCLE usa. However, we do have some correspondents that are damn speedy on the 4-wheeled La-Z-Boys. Nah, I'm just razzing you. We've done some things in the past, but unfortunately they are a bit few and far in between. Don't give up hope, though.

Kansas,

I'm no expert on the street subject, but a few of my colleagues assure me that the YZ450F is completely capable of being turned loose on the streets if you have the dough and desire to make it happen. At least here in Oregon. Be sure to give your local disgruntled DMV employee a call to find out just what you'll need. Also, my street guru pals tell me that if you are having trouble with emission regulations, be sure to check in neighboring counties because we have discrepancies here that can be overcome in less than 50 miles.

X is right though, the WR can become a dual-sporter too.

Hmmm,
I just figured I'd write.  I was on the waiting list forever it seemed like for the '06 YZ450.  It was worth the wait.   I had my doubts, though.  Honda has been making an awesome product for the past few years.  This is my first 4-stroke, even though I've ridden them all.  This has to be the nicest one I've ridden so far.  I just came off of an '03 YZ250, and this bike is so much more friendly.  I remember some of my buddies remarking about how I'm making it around the track faster than before.  Actually it's just gotten harder to keep up with this new bike.  It's awesome.  I'm kinda like the other guy who posted, I case jumps alot.  The first thing I noticed was the suspension really resists the bottoming, and all around it feels good.  It'll definitely make you more confident while you're out there.  Yeah, I'd definitely recommend this bike for anyone out there, regardless of skill level.  I have some questions about the motor, though.  How important is it that you religiously check the valvetrain?  I ride it pretty hard, although I'm nowhere near some of the guys I've seen.  Probably about 70 percent or so.  I did check the valve lash after the break-in, and I made sure I was careful to follow the manual with regards to that.  The first three rides I changed the oil and filter each time.  Now I think I'm gonna do it every two, maybe three rides if they're short.  Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
