We got an opportunity to participate in the R1/R6-forum.com's Deals Gap Convention. Our newest addition to the MCUSA fold, Adam Waheed, reports on the experience about his journey up and down the Tail of the Dragon.  Don't forget to check out the video links!

The first time I rode the Dragon it was on my new 1994 CBR600. I arrived at the old Cross Roads of Time motel which at that time looked like something out of 1950. The only other rider there was a fellow from Florida on a cruiser. I rode to the overlook that evening with no other traffic and the next morning nothing but me and a milk truck (It was on a Wednesday). I spent the rest of the week riding most the of the Blue Ridge Parkway.

I have ridden there about three times since that first trip and it has gotten worse each time as far as crowds and traffic. It is an absolute zoo on the weekend with sportbikes, cruisers, Corvettes, Miatas RX8s and the occasional 18 wheeler. As evidenced by the Killboy crash photos in last months' "Motorcyclist" it brings out the squid in many riders. There are too many good roads in the SW VA, East Tn and Western NC to spend much time riding 129.

My buddy rode his Ultra Glide through Deals' Gap. The place is so commercialized that they take your picture as you ride by, then try to sell it to you online. Nonetheless he had a good time.

I am the foremost expert on my opinion.

ccrider had a very valid point. The Gap is the most notorious and famous road in the Smokys, but it certainly isn't one of the best to ride. As far as I'm concerned, it's too tight and way too much work for the enjoyment provided. There are tons of roads in that area that are far superior. The Foothills Parkway and Cherohala Parkway a phenomenal rides. SR 28 going south from the store at the end of the Gap is another great ride. My personal favorite is Route 215 off of SR 64. To get there, you go from Franklin on 64 toward Highlands and Cashiers. When you get to 215, turn left and go to 276. At 276, turn around and go back the way you came. It's like a completely different road. Going over to the Dahlonega area in Georgia provides some of the best riding in the Smokys. Check out SR60, route 180, US19, SR17/75, and US76 going east till you hit Clayton, then it's time to turn around. When you are going West on SR60, it's time to turn around when you get to the Exxon station a few miles after you cross US76. Get a good North Georgia map and you'll see what I'm talking about. Enjoy the ride!

Hey Flickmiester, don't give away all the good places; we'll be swamped by more riders and unfortunately, squids. Seriously, I like to share good roads with friends but I hate to see them posted in forums. :p
