Got an Earth Day-inspired feature story with a riding stint to it. Ever wondered about the future of alternative-powered motorcycles, check out what's already out there in MotorcycleUSA's The Future of Alternative Motorcycles.

Electric rides have a long way to go to be what I consider a great replacement to what we have now. With that said, a little scooter for around town work is already a viable option for consumers. It's a start, at least.

In addition to alternatives to internal combustion engines, there are alternative fuels available to power our 2 wheel passions. I was in Buenos Aires nearly 4 years ago for a Natural Gas Vehicle exposition and conference, and snapped some pics of several natural gas powered motorcycles. These are actually quite common worldwide, as natural gas is a much lower cost fuel in other countries.

We don't have to give up the internal combustion engine... We can use other fuels that are readily available and actually plentiful. Worldwide, there are significant reserves of methane - we are just now starting to capture biogas from landfills, rather than flaring it off.

very cool stuff surfdancer. Alternative fuels certainly hold promise. Researching my article I came across some fuel cell designs that utilize methane instead of hydrogen as a fuel source. It will be interesting to see if,when this kind of designing reaches true mass production.
