Read about Jack and his unique race machines in the August edition of Rocky Robinson's Salt Addiction. | | Back to Top | | |

You background lends so much credibility to his machines. Sure they are different but they seem to work very well. The emotion involved with the recent accident will remain for sometime but without a doubt, the quest will be continued.

That was when he was designing the 7070 bike, and I remember that one sticking point in our discussions was that Jack already had a rider chosen for the bike - and didn't want to build it big enough for my 6' 4 1/2" skinny frame. I didn't know then that Cliff was his new rider. Anyway, if you haven't seen the DVD "Bonneville Wide Open" -- which is still available - do a search for it -- you haven't seen a lot of the Jack Costella story. The documentary details the story of three LSR teams (Nancy and I are one of 'em), and most of the time is spent on the first outing of the 5050 belly-flopper (as it is sometimes known) 'liner, with Andy Sills as the pilot. Watch the DVD and you'll see Jack discoursing on the design, his ideas, and so on. It's a great story. Rocky, you've seen the DVD, right?
And then there's your mention of Cliff Gullett. Nancy and I knew Cliff very well. He was one of the first land speed racers that showed me the way we all help one another. In my first race event at Bonneville I needed to borrow tools to swap sprockets on the ZX12R, and Cliff not only offered the tool -- but put me and the tool on the back of his ATV and drove back to our pit. Then he proceeded to do the sprocket swap while I stood there protesting that all I needed was a wrench, not the mechanic himself. That was Cliff -- and that's what damn near every land speed racer will do for you. We always made it a point to visit with Cliff and his team when we were on the Salt. I had the pleasure of being there to help Cliff get his Bonneville 200 MPH Club red hat. And I suffered the same fears and hurts when he crashed. nancy and I were in the registration area when Cliff went by in the 7070 bike -- just a few seconds before he crashed. We saw the bike when it was running straight and true -- and since that instant I've wondered if he was already starting to have troubles. I won't know 'til I have the chance to see Cliff again -- if I should be so lucky.
Rocky, thanks for the story on Jack Costella, thanks for the memorial for Clif Gullett, and thanks for helping spread the word about land speed racing. Nancy and I are at Bonneville as I write this -- to attend (and participate) in the World of Speed event. We've got the production ZX14R and the nitrous ZX12R. Everybody -- come on out and enjoy, or, if nothing else, log on to www.landracing.com and stay in touch with the event.

He and Jack had a once in a life time friendship and I am so glad that Cliff and Jack got to cross paths so that I could get to know Jack and his wife. Cliff was living his dream and I am thankful to Jack for helping make that come true. The the kids and I loved to come to the salt and help Cliff with what ever he was running at the time. It has been a pleasure to be around all of the wonderful people on the salt for all these years I can't imagine not going and seeing Cliff run. We will be back though because it wasn't just his passion we love the salt too. I would also like to thank you for the great tribute at the end of your article. Cliff had no idea he had touched so many lives and it make my heart ache a little less knowing that he will be remembered as one of the best. I would like to thank everyone for the cards and prayers and kind words. Cliff loved to run and set records on the salt but the experience would not have been as fun and successful with out our extended salt family. Go fast, BE SAFE, God Bless.
