Though he's our resident classic motorcycle expert, the Suzuki DL 1000 V-Strom so impressed our Memorable Motorcycle man that he felt compelled to write an article about it. If you're a fan of the V-Strom, then you'll understand where Frank's coming from.

Very, very entertaining writeup.

What is it with Brits and the English language; they act like they invented it or something.

My favorite bit:

the DL is one of the most seriously ugly motorcycles produced since the 1963 Greeves Sportsman (see Memorable Motorcycles if you are into hard core horror stories) - a motorcycle so distressingly offensive to the eye that wearing protective goggles was recommended for anyone attempting to look at it for more than 10 seconds.

Classic. :p

Great write up of a great bike. It has been on my X-Mas list for some years.

I have to agree with Frank's assessment of appearance.  Functionally, the V-Strom was right up my alley.  But, damn!  It sure is one ugly bike.  I know!  I know! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  Figuring I would have to get up every day and look at it, I just couldn't bring myself to buy it.  Went with the Uly instead and am darn glad I did.

Under full disclosure, Desmo owns a Ducati ST4 and a new HD something or other...so don't believe him when he implies "looks don't matter." :p

Hey now, it's an ST4S (Ohlins, 996 motor, Marchesinis etc) thankyouverymuch.

Never even KNEW there was a tricked out ST4; that must be a great bike...and very, very rare.

No wonder you ditched the TL.

Geez, Ohlins and Marchewhatchamacallits.

Have personal experience with an Ohlins shock.

Like buttah.

That bike is a keeper IMO.

If you're ever dumb enough to sell it...PM me first!

Only problem with owning a Duc here is I hear the local Duc dealer is going broke and the franchise may be moving from Santa Rosa to freaking Milpitas!

But to get back on topic, I think the VStrom motor is damned good.

Actually the St4s replaced the St4. The St4 used the 916 motor, the St4s used the 996 motor from the 996 superbike. Funny thing is that even though Ducati retuned it for the St4s to give it more low end, it also made more peak powah and torque as the standard style pipes flow much better than the underseat pipes that the 996 used.
The St4s is not that rare, still possible to find these bikes on the market (used) in great shape as they tend to be owned by more 'adult' riders.
The St3s is pretty much like the St4s but with the St3 motor.

How 'bout a picture(s)?  With the weather being what it is, and not too many bikes out on the road, I need a fix.  C'mon, man!  Just one...

That headlight on your bike, Desmo, looks like the firing port of one of them thar "War of the Worlds" spaceships.

Other than that, very nice.

No offense; they're great bikes, but kinda ugly.

But that's part of the charm.

Looks better than my little DRZ400SM by far and your bike has the newer version of the grin inducing engine in my TL.

Reminds me of a comment this past political go-around.  Now what was that?  Hmmm.  Something involving lipstick and a pig.

BTW, nice accoutrement.  :o)
