If we're talkin' Howlin' Wolf, you can't forget Highway 49.

And I'll take Route 66--Mick and the boys did OK, but I'm just sentimental enough to prefer Nat Cole's performance.

Willin' by Little Feat ("I been from Tucson to Tucumcari, Tehachapi to Tonopah...")

I've Been Everywhere ("I've been to Reno, Chicago, Fargo, Minnesota, Buffalo, Toronto, Winslow, Sarasota,...), a great country standard

Rocket 88 was about an Oldsmobile, but takes on a new meaning 50 years later with the 88 cubic inch HD

Poppity Pop (go the motorsickle) is a Charlie Parker / Dizzy Gillespie collaboration from 1945. Not their best work.

Little Honda ("not a big motorcycle, just a groovy little motorbike"), originally by the Hondelles, but covered well by the Beach Boys.

Richard Thompson - 1952 Vincent Black Lightning

Bob Seger - Roll me away

Merle Haggard - Sing me back home
(not really a bike song, I just really like it. Really anything by Merle, Or Johnny Cash).

There was a post like this a few years ago - maybe I'll try to find it...

There's a great obscure little folk song called "Eye of the Hurricane" by David Wilcox. The "Hurricane" in question isn't a storm, it's a Honda Hurricane, one of the early sportbikes from the mid-80's. It's also interesting because it's about a female motorcyclist:

***

Tank is full, the switch is on
Night is warm, cops are gone
Rocket bike is all her own, it's called the Hurricane

She told me once, it's quite a ride
It's shaped so there's this place inside
Where if you're moving you can hide
Safe within the rain

***

Great song, I first heard it in the late 90's when I was living in Charlotte, NC.

Although not m/c specific, "Mustang Sally" (Wilson Pickett's cover) and Chuck Berry's "Maybelline" are great road tunes. Stevie Ray Vaughn's "Pride and Joy" works for me too.

'California Here I come' pops to mind. Not exactly a motorcycle song, I guess, but a trav'l'n song.

And then there's 'Take this Job an' Shove it' which puts me in the mind, too.

Jhawk's mention of The Who reminded me of Quadrophenia. Though a bike is mentioned only once IIRC ("I ride a [Vespa] GS scooter with my hair cut neat..."), the whole scooter thing--and mods on scooters vs. rockers on real motorcycles--is a theme in the story. (It's a rock opera about disaffected British youth of the '60s, which was made into a movie in the '80s I believe, with a youngish Sting in a supporting role. Very much worth seeing if you like The Who.)

Excellent list. Thanks for posting it.

FYI, the Dylan song is Highway 61. The title refers to US 61, which parallels the Mississipi River from Minneapolis (where he grew up) to New Orleans.

Thanks Dan,

What was I thinking? Of course it is Highway 61...... duh

Actually, your post promted me to look where it is and fantastic - it is on my route and I will be riding along it, alongside the Mississippi. I have attached a picture of my route across the USA and I will be riding between Dubuque and Minneapolis on Highway 61, which is on the border of Wisconsin.

How cool is that?

I will certainly be listening to this song on that road!!!!

It looks like you've got a full itinerary, Gary. But your mention of following the Mississippi reminded me of a limited TV series called Feasting on Asphalt that aired on the Food Channel here in the US a couple of years ago. Host Alton Brown and a crew of TV buddies persuaded BMW to lend them a fleet of motorcycles, and they rode around looking for great eating spots on the road. There were actually two series, and in one they rode the length of the Mississippi. A Google search of Feasting on Asphalt DVD will turn up sources. BTW, I just did that and it also turned up a book with map included.

When you get to San Luis Obispo, CA (which you can't avoid if you ride down the coast from San Francisco to LA), send me a PM and I'll buy dinner.

And "Heads Carolina, Tails California" by Jo Dee Messina?

I will do that Dan. Dinner sounds great. I should be there in mid October time.

I was in California in May this year on a rented Harley and I stopped at Pismo Beach - I think that is near you. I seem to recall a long pier at Pismo.
